Day 99 "Still Life with Lemons" 6 x 12 mixed

I gathered a number of yellow things together to explore the warms and cools within one color family. It made an interesting painting exercise.  Here is a drawing of the still life setup with just a hint of the yellow, the rest left to the imagination.  It's an interesting exercise to think about how to make dark yellows, and cool yellows.  A while back, I wrote a blog post about the cool vs cold distinction in paintings, including an Edgar Payne painting.  Click through to see it.

"Last Light" 9 x 6 mixed 83rd #dailydrawing

A sketch of the warm last glow of light by the Scituate Lighthouse one night last summer.  Every evening nature cooperates, people gather to watch the sunset across the harbor from the lighthouse.  I loved the silhouettes against the warm sky.

"Caritas by A.H. Thayer" 9 x 6 pen, ink, warm gray #Inktober

Spent some time at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts for my birthday yesterday.  I am a fan of Abbot Handerson Thayer, and spent some time studying this painting "Caritas", which the MFA purchased from Thayer in 1897.  My research tells me it may have a relationship to some of the images in a mural he was commissioned to paint at Bowdoin College.  I'll have to get up there to see that.  I love the romanticism of the figures, the clothing, and the sumptuous renaissance framing which is an art in itself.  The clothing reminds me of the "one Grecian Urn" scene from "The Music Man" with Hermione Gingold leading her women's group in a modern dance.  Here is a brief link to that iconic scene.    

I remember visiting Washington DC a number of years ago.  The National Art Gallery was under construction, so a subset of the work was hung, salon style, in the Renwick Gallery.  I stopped in my tracks in front of a painting of roses, and it was Abbott Handerson Thayer's work.  

 Look at it here... wow!!!!  The edges, control of values.  
So, spending part of my birthday studying paintings was a great joy.

Sketching From the Car 6 x 9 watercolor and ink

  My husband has recently been called as pastor at the New North Church in Hinhgam, MA.  Driving up to church with him leaves me an hour to read, sketch, walk, even grade quizzes before the service starts.  Here is a sketch from the car during my cherished hour.  As always, thanks for looking.

"Sunday Morning Coffee" pen & ink 6 x 8

Sometimes I drive into Boston on Sunday mornings, hang out at a coffee shop and either grade papers or do some drawing.  I was sketching today at a tall table, when I looked up and there was a friend I hadn't seen in quite a while.  We spent the next hour catching up, which was a gift on this beautiful morning.
