Last summer I painted at a friend's house for a local garden tour fundraiser. Her studio door was open and surrounded by flowers. It was very inviting and a fun day talking to all the visitors. Here is the painting from the day, and above is a pen and ink sketch with gray marker, of the scene as well.

March remains gray and raw. I hung out in the car this morning before church and painted this scene across the street in my sketch book. The pines are lovely against the sky, and I loved the sweet antique cape peeking out. Spring is itching to burst forth, but is held in check with the low temperatures and the weekly storms we have had. There is still snow on the ground, and it alternated between snow flurries and sleet for most of the day. The trees are budding, which looks odd with a foot of snow on the ground.
I found a small watercolor set in my studio, and used it today (see below). The watercolor pans produced color a little grainy, but I think I'll use it again. I like the combination of colors, and it comes with a portable sable brush.

Scrolling through my old photos, I found this one of a sunflower garden taken from under the cooling leaves of a tree. I remember it was a hot day out in the sun, but the tree was accompanied by a small water feature which provided cooling through sound and temperature. Nice spot over on the corner of the Marshfield Fair Grounds here in town. I drew it in pen and ink, then added some warm gray marker, colored pencil, crayon and then white conte pencil. This is my sixty-eighth daily drawing. Thank you for looking.
This lovely antique home has a beautiful and inviting patio leading you into the studio. I was intrigued by the window on the far side of the studio. I often say that I love to paint the idea of "through". This alluring path into the studio brings the viewer in, and then through. I first laid in the approximate color and value of the inside room, then worked through the flowers and the layering of the flowers and carved out the wall behind them. The day began overcast, but then the sun peeked through. I quickly made an indication where the shadow line was on the wall, and modified the painting to include the sun. The house was on a garden tour so there were a lot of visitors talking about plants and mulch or no mulch and the beautiful beds surrounding this house.
